What are the opinions about using a 1983 Honda Magna V45 engine and trans in a autocross go kart?
This is the 750cc engine,

this is one way to convert the shaft drive,

I'm thinking with the engine low kart style and taller than kart tires. the drive shaft could go below the axle the chain would angle up from the drive shaft sprocket to the axle sprocket.
Something like this.

Thoughts....

Looks cool to me! If you already have the motor, why not? As I was investigating some options for a jack shaft for my own project and found some links that might be helpful for you:

Carrier for 530 sprocket

530 Sprocket

I think the motor is rated at something like 80bhp and 45 ft/ibs. So there is a lot more power available with later motorcycle engines. But if you have one laying around go for it.

I'd love to hear more. I was planning on using this with a 1 1/4" steel jack shaft. What failed? I wonder if doubling them up (both sides of sprocket) and putting the sprocket in double shear would help?

Probably not exactly the same carrier, but here you go.

Hard launch, tires bit, carrier went BOOM.

Since it's shaft drive, I'd turn the motor sideways so I could mount a sprocket to the shaft output and run a chain back to the axle.

Alternatively, one of those weird little Honda SUVs had a 4wd option, and the rear diff was about the size of a grapefruit. Might not hold up to the Magna, though.

I was given a basket case bike. No interest in riding a motorcycle. I would like to run at some of the area auto crosses.
Not to compete, just for grins. I'm trying to find out what is allowed.

That kart site has more heavy duty options that look promising.

TRX,
Would the shaft be rotating in the correct direction?
As I understand things, the trans output shaft turns clockwise as seen facing it from the left.
