Notice the ear protection in use and the RPM at ~40mph, 6000+rpm.
Fine for off-roading or autoX but not in town or especially highway use.

Gear it for a comfy cruise rpm and it will be too high (no more burnouts) to get out of it's own way.

Laminar, the grindhardplumming snowmobile powered Triumph would just about be perfect if a cruise control system could be used. I'm sure that a exhaust system could be changed relatively easy.

I don't think the snowmobile / CVT setup is suitable for a car.

Unless you like a screaming motor, that setup has no cruise mode

Not entirely true. Using a jackshaft, the right weights, and acceptable final drive gearing, you can have a 60 mph cruise at less than 3000 rpm
It's just that most racers tune the CVT to the peak power band. On 2 strokes a lot of them ran about 8000 rpm. My old A Mod was tuned for 7000 (both the AAEN pipes and clutch)- for better engine life.

Oh yeah, I just realized there's no clutch (manual) for a snowmobile engine.

I might be wrong and someone please tell me and (explain it if you can) if I am. But couldn't a shaft be ran off of the CVT or before/after it controlling the throttle position be somehow linked to a cruise control system?

I'm not sure how it works, but Toyota is running a CVT in several cars. They have cruise, but I'd bet it's a more complicated speed and TPS sensing PID loop controller.

Thanks TooBusy, I was recently looking at snowmobile engines and then fell into the racing snowmobile rabbit hole. As some me of them put out over 200 horsepower yet weigh around 100lbs like these http://www.aaenperformance.com/V4_racing_engine.asp
Don't know if there's a CVT that could handle this amount of power without breaking or not for extended periods of time. Such as in the highway or in a daily driver. By the way I would like to use 235 X 65 X 17 tires or around that size.

Okay, I'm sold. You've thought it out, thought it out better than I have, and I thank you for satisfying my curiosity.

There is a lot of 600cc mini-cars in Japan, purchased to get a lower tax rate. It might be a possible option to import one of those powertrains. Almost all would be FWD, but would work for a mid-engine build. Davew

I have one I just imported. A Suzuki Cappucinno. 650cc Turbo 64hp Limited the by rules that regulate the 'Kei' cars in Japan. If I could figure out how to post a pciture I would do so.

@bgeddes

I did a Google images search on that car - pretty cool. It's front engined and rear wheel drive too, according to Wikipedia.

I wouldn't spoil one if it was in good shape, but a wrecked one with a good engine/driveline would make an excellent donor for a Locost.

Cheers,

Going down the JDM small displacement engine rabbit hole, I came across the following website, and a Mitsubishi Pajero Mini:

https://carfromjapan.com/cheap-used-mit ... 018a70b296

Could be imported, if you were tearing out the drive train you wouldn't even need to worry about registering it. Other usable parts as well, like seats, etc. It has your 4wd automatic drive train. Didn't do too much research on it; but I'm thinking of all the fun projects that could be had.
