I was reading about the CBR1000RR - powered S600 that Jay Leno featured on one of his shows and the builder said that donor engines were cheap and plentiful, and that he'd bought an entire low-mileage bike for something like $1,500.

Huh? Where are these deals to be found? I'm finding more along the lines of bare engines for $2,500 and complete bikes with seized engines for $3,500.

KBB says the trade-in value of a 2006 in average condition is $4,600 with a typical list price $6,670. I doubt you will find one for $1,500 unless it was from a salvage auction.

Yeah, that sounds more like it. Maybe I'll try the salvage auctions.

The owner of the S600 is a member here. Ask him!

Are you talking about ccrunner? He did the N600 with a VFR800 drivetrain. That is different from the OP's desire for a CBR1000RR power plant. And Leno's car was an S600

Still, it may be of some help for him to reach out to ccrunner. If it helps any, here is his build log. https://www.locostusa.com/forums/viewto ... 36&t=14452

Salvage through a service that typically adds $500 or so to the cost but still worth it. Especially when you don't need to put the bike on the road with a clear title.

Another option is bike shops for trade-ins or ask the service department about buying wrecks. Bent fork, busted plastic trim, salvage title, owner hasn't paid the shop? No problem.

I've bought a few donor bikes for various projects and the salvage auctions are the only way to go.

The best was for gokarts, people on the forums buying Honda 6hp engines for $300+ and a CVT for $400, and I would go buy a low km GS-500F or similar for ~$200 to get 50hp and a 6 speed manual for less than just the Honda motor
