So my understanding is that programmable automatic chain oilers will exponentially extend the life of BEC chains given their torturously short length and proclivity towards heat generation.

So how does that work? How much oil is expended? Do you leave a puddle every time you stop? Are they as effective as I've heard?

I don't know why anybody would use a chain on a BEC if there are other options, even if they designed around chain and machinery criteria for speed and length so a standard 530 O-ring chain and spray wax is all you need.

The oil immediately slings off. Adding a few extra links with an idler on the slack side will help spread the heat load.

Thank you for the link. That's useful. A middie configuration creates more packaging issues than a classic front-engine setup. I like the idea of a Transworks min-diff and even know someone who might sell me his, but the problem is that if you use it on a donor that was set up for shaft drive you have a detuned sport-tourer motor as well as the parasitic drag of two sets of bevel gears, and if you turn the motor transversely, the engine mass is offset to the drivers side which is not ideal. The vast majority of middie BECs go chain drive.

Modern O ring chains are lubed on the inside. External oil feed might save on sprocket wear, but will make a mess with strayed oil.

Another option is to build an oil bath chain drive with a tensioning shoe on the slack side so the center distance does not change with wear. A hawk type adapter could be used to couple. No bevel drive except for spiders, no mess, much longer life than dripping oil, and the engine can be offset as far as you like to the curb side. Straight cut gears instead of chain are also a more expensive option.
