Cheap Clamps

Here is what I tried for clamps and holding peices in place.

1. Buy a 12 ft peice of 1"x2"
2. Cut into foot lenghts
3. Drill it with three holes one on each end and one in the middle
4. Match the peices up, best you can.
5. Buy bolts, nuts, and washers...you may need two or three bolts per unit depending on how you use it.
6. Tighten the bolts so that the wood sandwiches the metal and holds it in place.
(Good for holding a peice, or 6, until you can tack it into place)

Yes I am cheap...

No, you are frugal, it would be cheap if you told me to get it from the dumpster of a local cunstruction site....

I did this with a 2x4, I found that a 1x2 broke too easy.

You near a construction site?!!!!?

The idea is not that fantastic if you know a thing or two...but if everyone knew everything how useful would these forums be? We all have to start from somewhere. I see Steve Grabers web site and his build, Meerkats build and some of the UK guys builds and I am humbled instantly.

I would rather save money on dumb stuff and save it for the smart stuff.

If I could only convice my wife what is smart then I would be a genius...

I've been very happy with the cheap-o grip clamps I've gotten from Harbor Freight. They have 'em on sale every so often, and a 12" clamp will go for under $5.00. I do enough work in the garage and in renovating properties that they come in very handy.

The picture below shows a "good"/expensive Quick Grip clamp (yellow) which was around $20-25 or so next to the $5 HF clamp. Yes, the expensive one is better quality - it grips tighter and is easier to release once it's on tight, but for me it's not worth the extra expense.

I've done similar clamping actions as described in the above posts using these clamps, although I'll typically use scrap angle iron or other scrap steel instead of wood.
