So this is not what you have lots of cheaply available and experience, but: Toyota 1GZ-FE. 5L V12 outta Japan, extremely smooth (you can balance a coin on-edge on the top and rev it) and reliable, a bit smaller and lighter.

They can make OK power (>500HP) with forced induction, though it's certainly not the best power/weight or power/money ratio engine you're gonna find.
