Sounds like you are not using the R1 fuel tank. Definitely put the pump as close as possible to the tank.
If you decide to pull fuel via a tube inserted from the top of the tank instead of gravity feed with a low outlet like the R1 tank, you might as well put the pump on top too for a shorter distance for the pump to prime.
Use a good quality prefilter to protect the pump. I’d use 5/16 or 3/8 steel or nylon line and add another, typical carb filter between the carbs and the hard line as a “last chance” screen to help prevent carb problems.
