I thought I would post my project now that it's complete, won't call it finished since it has not been fully shaken down yet. Had to put it away for the winter before I could get insurance and plates, did road test it around the neighborhood though...so far everything seems to be working. I did not do a build log but felt obligated to the forum since it has been such a great resource to at least post here. Came across the book many years ago and eventually discovered this forum followed by number of years of lurking, dreaming and planning. Finally five years ago the project would begin, actually more like a leap of faith that I can do this. I always had the idea to build a close replica of the 7 with clamshell fenders and no roll bar, I guess it's just my sense of aesthetics. First hurdle was to find a local donor, turned out all the usual donor suspects could not be found for anything that could be considered consistent with the Locost philosophy. However, what there was plenty off is MGB stuff, perfect for the build I had in mind...not a horsepower monster but more of a period car, so in a few weeks rounded up all the running gear bits. Condition was not really important since the motor would be rebuilt along with anything else as needed. Then I stumbled on Nick47 build log, incredibly he had done a MGB based build and published a build manual! Very grateful to Nick for doing the heavy lifting having sorted out the frame rails and suspension. The build process was a great experience, it took longer than expected but I really was not in any hurry. Along the way I learned new skills and amazingly still have some patience capacity left over. I'd like to see the engine bay and fuel tank area. Not assuming they are finished, I'd just like to see them. I like the spare very much. |

There is a picture in the Book of the windshield template that shows it but no dimensions. I did find a picture somewhere showing that curve as well, I have attached it here. Oil pressure is a mechanical gauge fed of off the same port that the MGB electrical pressure transducer was connected to. The temperature gauge is also mechanical hooked to a port in the cylinder head just below the thermostat. The fuel gauge input is from a Bosch sender, just had to make sure ohms matched between the two units. Voltage gauge was the simplest to install. |

Beautiful work! I also like the color! The rear mounted spare tire is a very nice touch. Noticed you have what looks like SU HS4 carbs. What year was the motor? Could we see a couple of close ups of the interior? I am just at the point of designing the motor mounts for my MGB based build. DO you have any more photos of your design for them? Aren't we a needy lot- asking for more shots and details. But we like viewing good work, and great work like yours demands more admiration. Thom |

Thanks for posting those. Very nice. Any plans for a heater or top? I can post pics of the traditional heater setup but I don't think it would be worth the effort; basically an mg/triumph heater box with no controls, just open ended, on it's side, sucking from the tunnel above trans then dumping into the foot wells with no defrost or dash vents. No remote controls, just a faucet knob on the back of the engine for open or closed. Much better off with either a diy blow thru or one for a kit or actual caterham. I have some pics of the original top system. Basically a tube that forms the B pillar is hinged above the coilover, bent to match the rear body curve and lay on top. The second tube hinges off the first about 3 inches above the main tube. The second tube lays inboard of the first with the same curvature. Fabric straps rivet to the tubes and run between the main and secondary tubes and from the secondary down to the rear body to set the angles, which are about 45deg forward of vertical for the secondary is 90deg to the main. There are seven snaps around the windscreen with the outboard snaps a couple inches below the row. The fabric top is three pieces. This topic may provide some ideas: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=6451 |

Very, very nice build. It's unusual in a good way. But geez, we've been getting all these "stealth" builders recently. I think you may be the third one in the last few months. What gives with that? Are you guys a secret subculture within the CIA or something? Come on out and embarrass yourselves as you go along like the rest of us! Cheers, |
