The front fender mounts look too thin in crossection at the fenders edge to cope with the loads long-term if you have pot holes in your future. You can keep the tire gap by running the bracket boss through the fender flange and bolt on the fender. Much easier to remove that way. May need to carry a hack saw to cut the brkt to the spindle if it fails on the road somewhere and you need to pull whats left of the fender to drive home.
In my experience similar structures fail at welds, so I don’t have any on the fender mounts. The thin sections under the fender are just the tubes flattened; I made a die to gradually taper to the flat and used a hydraulic press. They are fastened using Goop, that I I’ve found to be incredibly strong provided it’s left undisturbed for three days to allow it to fully cure (even the slightest movement seems to mess up the strength). The tubes are brazed to the bolt mounts.
I’m aware of the failure susceptibility. Thanks for your tip; I’ve put a hacksaw blade in my tool bag!
