Good question. I just ran into that yesterday. I liked the old "indefinite" edit capability if it is still available.

It was intentional. I believe we did 30 minutes after the original post: do you think more time is needed?

There have been a few instances of people deleting their posts days or weeks later. I suggested the change since this happening ruins the forum's content. If someone wants something removed after the edit time one of us mods will be happy to do it provided it is a reasonable request.

It's not so much deleting posts as correcting or adding info. I many times cringe an hour or a day later when I read one of my posts and I want to correct grammar or make clearer

Admittedly I'm a bit of a 'serial editor' myself, but really try to use it only in ways that (IMHO) will improve the wording (>95% of my edits), content, or quality my posts...And occasionally to even try to reduce my own escalations in 'spirited' debates. I've always appreciated the unlimited editing style here, and feel it shows a level of trust among the site members towards each other not common on lower signal to noise ratio sites.

However, if there have been problems recently with this being done in a manner that is detrimental enough to the integrity of posted information on this site, I can understand the unfortunate decision to change this policy. From my limited ability to see it, any such negative editing would certainly be the exception rather than the rule with the caliber of membership this site has.

Is it possible to deal with any such abuses in some way on an individual level* rather than making universal site changes? Would 24 hours be enough to have prevented the majority of lost post content that has occurred to prompt this change, while still being minimally intrusive to the much more frequent beneficial post editing as well?

Another thought I would have edited in here, is that I can see the need for this more on sites with significantly shorter average time between posts in a thread, where it's not uncommon for 10+ posts to be added to a thread within 30 minutes. Along these lines, might it be possible for a conditional edit limit to be put in place, kind of like the "This post has been edited" comment that shows up only after another post has been added to the thread. So maybe give X hours after a subsequent post, if you need to prevent content from being changed after it has been replied to?

Sorry, just throwing out a few random ideas.

I think one day would be good. ...doesn't really matter a ton to me though. I usually end up clearing up any typos when I click "preview".

I'm of the opinion that if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

So why did you guys feel this was necessary?

I'm not on another forum that does this.

I, for one, eagerly await the feature that highlights anything that I type that which stupid or just plain in error. And then suggests corrections.

BTW part of that is on your smart phone and is why most phone posts are unreadable & unintelligible. Everyone complains about it so you want more of the same/

Many if not most forums do it so people can't write something that starts an argument then go back and change it later.

In our case there have been several instances where people have gotten bent out of shape over something and they decide take their toys and stomp away from the sandbox. What is left is a bunch of blank posts and whatever good information was there is now destroyed.

Would a longer window (2 hours?) be more acceptable to members?

I would agree with having something in place to prevent this type of unfortunate scenario from playing out. I would still cast my vote for a 24 hour time limit though...But if 2 hours is the longest the admin staff feels is reasonable, I'm sure I can learn to live with that as well.

Guilty as charged. It must have been a couple years or more ago. I regret removing the record of my content about designing for max mpg and many other things where there was no response. Nothing was backed up so when it's gone, it's gone. I don't delete anymore. Nobody's perfect. :roll:

I would put it at 24 hours. That gives people a chance to sleep it off and reread their posts the next day.

We are fortunate that in our little corner of the internet we have a good bunch that puts effort into their posts. The example set here seems to reduce the bad stuff, new members seem to often comment on this. It does come up sometimes though that people delete their material. People have also gone back and edited their posts, in the middle of a heated discussion.

In cases like this I think an apology is better then going back and adjusting what you said. People tend to respect that whereas changing what you actually said and most of the forum read is closer to being dishonest.

I think the new policy is fair, but maybe the time limit will be upped to cover something like 2 hours.

A down side of this is that it will make it hard for setting up special threads that people can own and do things like update a table of contents in the first post. I've been wondering if doing something along those lines would help us organize our information on specific topics like "where do I put my brackets for a set of Miata spindles" etc.
