Great pictures, Perry! Good to hear you're enjoying retirement, too. Congrats!

Phew! I think I can hatch a dastardly plan to catch up with you, Locost-wise. I'll just send you tourist literature from one of the other 9 provinces or three territories each month. That might give me a whole year to work. Yeah, yeah, that's the ticket!

I'm glad you're enjoying yourself.

Cheers

So, sometimes we get some pretty good hail storms, anywhere from pea size to golf bail size.

If a person was pulling their 7 around on vacation there isn't any garage to keep the 7 in case of a hail storm. The tonneau cover will protect the cockpit and boot. After a few hours on the sewing machine I am now the proud owner of a vinyl quilted bonnet cover that should keep hail stones from beating down the aluminum bonnet.

There, fixed that for ya!
Actually, Perry, that's a good idea and a nice looking cover-up you got there.

When/if the $10 overdrive band starts slipping, the temps will also start climbing quickly. Just keep it out of the od detent and use it as a 3 speed until you get time to change the band. It is basically a c4 anyway. A late 80s aod should have most of the bulletins incorporated. The band usually lasts about 80,000 miles in a 4000 lb car driven by the average non-mech, so the one that is in it now will probably last a long time if the tv cable is set properly for adequate pressure and the fluid was changed as it should be. A deeper numerically higher gear helps it last longer too.

Sorry, I must beg to differ. I once owned the same vehicle as this donor car - an '88 TBird (one of the few that I've owned that I wish I still had) - and the AOD transmission never, ever gave me a lick of trouble. It had 82,000 miles on it when I bought it, and almost 17 years old with 169,000 when I had to sell it. And I took full advantage of what was in actuality a roller cam 1986 speed density Mustang engine (down rated about 10 HP because it lacked true dual exhaust)

Also had a 1981 Cougar with the same transmission, same reliability, but it had the anemic 200-whatever CI Windsor V8, so that doesn't really count

I use hole saws, Forstner bits, and Brad Point bits to drill through aluminum. Use slow speed, this prevents the aluminum from heating up and distorting. I marked and drilled 1/4" holes next to my small radius corner holes for shearing the aluminum with electric shears.

Like I said this works for me, there are most likely better ways and more expensive tools to use. Hope this may help some one along on their build.

Well it's been a long time since I posted on this thread.
I see that I have around 19,000 klicks on the L.S.O. so I figured I'd pull it into the OEM garage for a check up (according to the OEM recommendations).
Believe me when I tell you he treated the L.S.O. like a champ!
He did a tune up...spark plugs, rotor, dist cap, HT wires, oil change, checked all fluid levels, wheel alignment, and tire rotation.
All good for another few klicks

Is that 19,000 of those little, metric Klicks, or 19,000 of the serious-length, Imperial Klicks, Perry?

In either case, that's quite an accomplishment. You're closing in on the highest figure I've seen mention yet, which was just north of 22,000 miles as I recall it. You'll probably add in another 5K this winter here in California.

Cheers,

Hey Lonnie, that was kms, so just about 12,000 miles.
Yes we hope to some miles on it touring California this coming winter!

Hey Perry,

I got my steering gear specs to the vendor, so my next task is fabricating/locating the A-arm brackets, and deciding on the bushings/bushing tubes and DOM ends for my A-arms.

I was looking at your setup back on page 4 of this build log. I swiped and marked up the relevant photo from that page, and it's just below.

Perry's Bushings.jpg

That's pretty much what I need to do. I can't bend thick metal into brackets accurately, so I was going to use some RHS tube, and make the bushings/bushing tubes fit that. It looks like you already solved the same problem. Do you recall what dimensions you used for the RHS, DOM tube, and what Energy Suspension bushing/bushing tube set you used?

Also, it looks like both the Champion and Gibbs books leave some clearance between the bushing tube (it looks slightly larger than the bushing rubber it's in) and the inside distance of the bracket. Did you do that as well? I'd think you wouldn't want too much clearance so the A-arm bracket doesn't move back and forth on the bolt when on the road.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Hello Lonnie

To make my br@cketz I use either 2"x2"x.125" or 2"x3"x.125" tube.
The Energy Suspension bushing is 9.9107
The bushing tube is DOM 1 5/8"x.188" wall. Then have to cut tube to length. I ordered it from Aircraft Spruce, it's expensive.

Then last year I found a place in Eastern Canada that sells the bushings and bushing tubes. I ordered the large bushing for 1/2" bolts and the large bushing tube. I believe they ship to USA

Thank you, Perry.

I have a good length of 2"x3"x1/8" RHS in the garage, so this should work out.

Cheers,

I forgot to mention that when cutting the tube for the br@cketz I remove the side with the welded seam.
