I found that guy on instagram! competitionspeedworks

Sent him a message saying I was building a rotary locost and would love to check out his car. His reply was cool... and that was about it. Was kind of hoping to meet up with him. He's only ~15 minutes from me.

Yep, that's the one. Didn't realize he had all those other projects as well.

He seemed a fairly quiet guy & mostly kept close to his car despite the huge car show going on. Pretty open when I was asking him questions, though.
His must be based on the original plans, though. It seemed tiny compared to mine. I can get my feet on the pedals no problem, even in boots. His seemed like you'd need some narrow soled driving shoes to drive.

Really wanting to get back to work on mine :BH:

I've heard good things about Sharkhide.

Finally read this build front to back, but didn't se it mentioned if yours is a 4 or 6 port?

I've been looking a bit & found both locally, on Craigslist.
Just over $1k for an auto 4 port & about $1600 for a 6 port 6MT.

Curious if the 6 port is worth the extra $ for the more power, looks like both Renesis options make the same torque.

Mine is a 6 port. It's really hard to justify the extra cost of the 6 port looking back. There's the cost of the motor and the bigger hassle is the engine control. When you add in the complexity of controlling the 6 port actuators and 6 vs 4 injectors it bumps you up from a base model stand alone into much more expensive ECU's. On either motor I found that a late 90's mustang 4.6 throttle body bolts right up. That gets you by the drive by wire throttle that comes on the engine. They only run ~$30 brand new on ebay.

Here's a run down of outputs you need to control on the two motors. this doesn't include fuel pump, fan or idle control which is another 3 outputs.

6 port needs 10 or 11 ecu outputs depending on year of engine
Injectors- 2 or 3 depending on year
04-08 engine uses 6 injectors that can be batched into 3 pairs of 2
09-11 engine uses 4 injectors that can be batched into 2 pairs of 2
1 output, 3&4 port actuator
2 outputs, 5&6 port actuator
1 output, variable intake valve
4 outputs, ignition coils(these can't be run wasted spark)

4 port needs 8 outputs
2 outputs, fuel injectors- 4 injectors batched into pairs of 2
1 output, 3&4 port actuator
1 output, variable intake valve
4 outputs, ignition coils(these can't be run wasted spark)

If you skip the idle control (I did and it's been a non-issue) most bare bones ECU's will do the 10 outputs total you need for a 4 port motor. I really like this guy for a 4 port motor- https://www.fueltech.net/products/ft450-efi-system
you even get a configurable dash in the deal.

All good info, thanks!
I've already got a digital dash (I think with GPS speedo), but am leaning towards Renesis for the simplicity of getting a running option for not much different cost compared to getting my S4 in running order.

I'm assuming an auto 4 port Renesis won't have any issue being mated to a manual?

And speaking of motors... Went to the dyno yesterday and didn't get much accomplished. I got about 3/4 of the part throttle tuning done and took a break. When I started the car back up it ran for a few seconds and died. My motogadget electronic fuse/light control crapped out on me. Not super surprising since a few years back when I first got the car running I partially fried it. I never got the RX-8 alternator control to work properly and sent about 100 volts into the car. The motogadget originally just had the starter control circuit blown out and considered myself lucky. This was the first time the car had run for more than say ten minutes and it went completely out. Luckily found a brand new one on facebook marketplace for $185 shipped verse $300+.

Didn't get a picture on the dyno but here she is loaded up and ready to go-

You need to put on the flywheel from a manual 6 port motor & pilot bearing but that's about it. Your current engine might have a lightweight flywheel already? if so you can just unbolt the auto flex plate then bolt that flywheel and clutch right on.

Mine has the stock 26# S4 MT flywheel, as far as I can tell, everything in the short block S4 that I have is/was stock.
Prev owner was using it as a placeholder to get everything in place.

As much as I'd love that 9k RPM 6 port, the 4 may be the practical route to take.
We had a 6 port RX8 for our wedding 'getaway' car, loved screaming that thing through town.

Dyno pic. My buddy had snapped a shot at the start of my ill fated day.

I also got a vinyl sample to try out. Color has a little too much blue in it for me. The wrapping was slow but came out pretty good(the wrinkling in the back I didn't try to fix). I also didn't do any cleaning before hand so there was some debris under the vinyl. I've tried wrapping before and just done OK. I changed up two things this go round that made a HUGE difference. First was the gloves I used. I've tried wrapping gloves and bare handed. Both ways the adhesive sticks to your hands and makes working the vinyl way harder with bare handing being slightly better. I used some silicone dishwashing gloves(worn backwards) this go round. Wow what a difference they made. The adhesive doesn't stick at all so you aren't fighting that the whole time. The other thing was using a much smaller heat gun. All the tutorials online they use a blow torch or big handheld gun. I used a very small 300w heat gun meant for repairing phones. It was so much easier to control the heat with it. I could also just leave it on the whole time. The silicone gloves also shined here as well. I didn't have any issues from the gun half burning me or when smoothing the hot vinyl with my silicone clad fingers.

Vinyl isn't a bad idea, easy-ish to fix after some rock chips, and you can change it down the road. Fenders/hood I imagine to be the easiest to wrap, compared to something like the nose.

Haven't done much with the car in the last few months. The clutch let go on my daily driver and it has high mileage so I replaced the motor at the same time and that sucked up a bunch of time. I'd like to get a newer car but they don't make manual transmission wagons anymore... Anyway I've finally picked a color and will finish the body work and wrap the car over the next 6-8 weeks. Color is called Liquid Copper. Also my hood had buckled in two spots when I formed it. I had a local sheet metal fab/hot rod shop rework it and that is finally done.

That was the first thing my wife said- Everyone is going to think it's that color because of UT.

Mt first body part that is officially done! Took a little over an hour to do that one fender. I'm sure I'll get quicker as I go.
