Would prefer to not buy a hoist to only use it twice & have to store it. My dad has one, but he lives almost 2 hrs away. If it comes down to it, I'll have him truck it down here, but we should be able to get the engine out by hand, gravity is the only thing holding it in right now.

Fair enough. Suppose it's a bit different starting from scratch vs where you're currently at. I used mine dozens of times, get the engine out of the donor, moving the engine around, getting it in the chassis when on the build table, and out, and then in, then out, then in......., moving the chassis off the build table, used it to move other items, used it at work. If you need it for a one time deal, don't know about your location, but around here you can rent them for I believe $25/day.

When I need a hoist, I buy a used one on craigslist. I can usually find one within a half hours drive for under 100. I usually need it for removal and installation, usually a good time apart. Then when I'm done, I'll post it back and get my money back. No storage necessary.

Engine should be coming out this afternoon.

Next up is putting some elbow grease into cleaning up the frame.

Was advised to look at picking up a dye penetrant kit to check the welds prior to paint.

Glad to only have 1 more step of moving backward. Forward progress on the way!

You can rent a hoist in my area. Perhaps you can in your area too, if you need one?

Cheers,

Probably could. Houston is huge, so I'm sure they're out there.
Will probably look into that when installing the engine, with the trans attached.

Down to the bones.
Recruited some help in getting the engine removed, and wow that 13B is heavy for being so small.
Got the frame up on a couple tables & at a more workable height to start on the cleanup. Going to order a dye penetrant kit to check the finished welds on the frame then paint.

Bent legs on that roll bar are a really bad idea.

Other than that, the frame looks pretty nice.

Do you mean the curved lower/inner legs, or the long rear legs with the bend midway?
Suppose, if there's room, it could be triangulated to where the lower X & curved inner bars terminate at the bottom?

The long rear legs with the bend midway. They are 95% of what's keeping the hoop vertical and above your head when it's in action. A bend just makes it that much easier to collapse.

I personally don't think the inner curved legs do much, so a bend there doesn't really matter, but thats just me.

While I don't disagree that it isn't really the right way to do it, given that most folks just weld or bolt them to the 3/4" rear rail, it's still stronger than that.

I had that thought on a few items with my car as well. "That's probably not 100% the correct way to do this, but if it ever becomes an issue, I'm likely dead anyway".

I made, roughly, that comment to someone recently.
Something to the effect of: If you roll it, you've done a lot wrong already & are in for a world of hurt.

Guess I must be old, I think a bit differently. Before I built my first 7, The Chevette one, 10 years ago, I built an airplane, and I took flying lessons. The most heart stopping event in my lifetime was taking that flight in my airplane for the first time and asking myself "you built it, would you trust your life in it?" And the simple answer to that was " I took no shortcuts, I've built it to the best of my ability, and it's built by the according to engineering specs." Well that was a few haircuts ago and I'm still here.

What I'm getting at is "you're building it, build it right so you can trust your life in it"

horchoha,

I know the feeling. Imagine having to trust your life to somebody else's work. I was sent to fix the landing gear on a DC9 in Dallas. Borrowed some jacks from another airline to swing it. Flying jumpseat, as we are coming in to land at ATL, the captain jokes "let's see if you fixed the landing gear" and swings the knob. Every mech should have to test fly his own work.

Jamador already said he doesn't want to re-engineer anything. We'd all build different from each other.

The safest car is never driven. If safety were first, nobody would do anything.
