Well, seeing as Sean and I are such good buddies, if he thinks I can do it, I must be able to do it. So, with only Saturday morning and a $50 fender to lose, I set forth!

I'm curious how the second one will turn out, as it would be ideal if they were similar, but as to the first, I'm quite pleased.

They aren't attached yet, just sitting on a spacer.

Three more to go. :-|

Looks quite good! Only 3 to go? Should be done by tomorrow evening. Probably sooner as you gain experience. :D

Nice job! Looks correct now

If you over shrink, you can hammer the flange to stretch. Metal is like clay (or pizza dough if you prefer food analogies.)

You can gather it ("shrink") and squish it ("stretch")

Nice work, keeping that in mind, in case I need a solution for the front fenders. I've got a few glass front fenders, but haven't taken to time to see if I have enough to make into 2 'minis'.

Fender looks good. Just need a planishing hammer to smooth the shrinking. Looks like it will need to be set off the tire a bit more to clear 3/4 tube framing and tire removal without fender removal. Interested to see how you tackle the support framing. A two piece frame that separates near the inner sidewall should allow for fender removal without tire removal in case of failure on the road. Mustang 2 spindles?

Yeah, that fender is looking pretty darned good. Some finishing work, and you're ready to design/build the supporting structures for them.

Cheers,

Damn! That front slip angle is way too large and the Ackerman is just a muddle.

Bad idea to hang one of two fender br@ckets off the caliper slider pin?

I suspect it is, but it's a light fender and option No. 2 is way more convoluted, maybe it would work....

Edit, on 4th thought, I may be pretty straightforward to hang it off the upper ball joint. Is that a bad idea too?

Hanging off the ubj is fairly common among the kits and gives plenty of leverage. Make the fender bracket two piece so it can be removed without touching the ubj.

Take some good pics of the inboard side of the spindle from spindle height, front and rear with the steering full lock with the fender sitting about an inch off the tire with spacers to leave room for the framing through the fender flange. Maybe I can give you some ideas with mspaint that you may not have considered.

I'm happy with the front one, but the caliper is in the way for what I'd like to do for the rear. I may just run it straight back from the bottom end of the upper BJ.

Replace the lower caliper brkt bolt with a full thread grade 5 or 8 bolt that protrudes at least an inch or so through the brkt (drill&tap all the way through), then add a 1/8x1-1/4 strip bent 90 to weld to the end of the 3/4 DOM tube as a mounting tab, washer, lock washer, nut.

Use 1/8x2 strip at the ubj with the long flanges. The inboard edge of the flange aligns above the center of the tubes. The front and rear edges taper from 2 inches to a point with a 30-40 degree angle so the brkt can flex uniformly rather than flex at the end of the flange to reduce cracking.

Because the tubes are inboard from the caliper, bleeder and caliper removal should be fine without removing the brkt.

Made some improvements. Stiffer, stronger, much better access to the ubj nut, and easier to remove. Uses a thick washer welded to the end of a tube that is two or three inches long for the rear leg to clear the caliper. The tube must have a large enough ID to provide clearance around a socket to fit over the nut on the lower caliper brkt.
The washer should be fabbed from 1/8 strip versus an off the shelf thin washer.

Thanks Miata!

I'll have to take a look and see what I can do with clearances.
