You should never have rust in the coolant system. The antifreeze contains corrosion inhibitors that prevent rust when the ratio to water is adequate. Too little antifreeze=rust=rough shaft sealing surface = tears up seal = weep hole leak. Heads and block are bare cast iron inside the jacket. There are tiny holes in the head gasket that can get clogged and cause uneven cooling around cylinders and gasket failure.

Just flush with water to get out what rust you can then refill with 50/50 or at least the minimum needed for your climate.

I can recommend Zerex G-05 for mixed metal cooling systems, it's well known to keep Mercedes diesels from corroding.

BMW 82141467704 concentrate is also good for alloy blocks, and isn't actually that expensive, which was surprising.

Does this look like the correct location, blue wire, to hook up the tach? I tried to follow the directions as best I could, but they are pretty vauge as they are generilized for a wide range of applications. I started it up and it seems to work, just looking for some other opinions as I read hooking it up wrong can damage the tach.

Probably has + and - molded into the coil case but since it is running, the tach lead goes to the negative along with the dizzy pickup. The positive is keyed power.

The gauges are wired in sequence to keyed power.

Hunted around on the coil, popped the connection and there they were, the +/-, and I did indeed have it connected to the negative, so I'm going to assume that is correct.

Dumb it down for me, what is "dizzy pickup", don't think I've ever heard that term?

Thanks for the assistance.

I was referring to coil power + but it appeared to be wired correctly from what I can see.

"Dizzy" as in distributor, which spins, and spinning makes you dizzy.

Pickup is the electromagnetic proximity sensor within the distributor that sense the passing teeth on the shaft, usually one tooth per cylinder. The pickup signal requires an amplifier to ensure it is strong enough to trigger the ignition coil. The amplifier is usually called an ignition module that is sometimes mounted on the distributor or remotely within a couple feet of the pickup.

I've been working on some CAD as well and have been impressed with how it's coming together.

First fitment test.

I think I'll have a decent amount to wrap around the upper bar along the top but may cut out a bit for the corners to make it easier to bend. After all, just need enough bent to get covered by the trunk.

Final fitment to come.....

Also got my mirrors on.

And besides a few minor items, one being the shifter knob, finished the cabin.

It pops. Interesting shifter. How do you access the area forward of the dash?

There has been a huge problem here lately with cat thefts due to the shortage of metals required to make them. It takes about 30 seconds with a battery powered sawzall. Better quality cats like on the prius and easy access vehicles like high gc suvs with oem cats are primary targets but it doesn't get much easier than this. It's kinda like leaving you wallet in the seat with less than a grand in it for minimal consequences. Just fyi.

MV8, I'm gonna take "Pops" as a compliment, thanks! :D

The shifter is a piece of junk. It's a knock off from e-bay, think it was $45.00. Suppose it would work okay, if I thread every hole one size larger, get new hardware, and Loctite everything. It will be replaced, just need to get this thing roadworthy before I start modifying parts that actually work. Steering wheel is another thing I'd like to replace....

The scuttle is secured by a row of button bolts, three on each side, running horizontally on the both sides of the car. They undo and the entire things pops off. A pain with wipers, but I'm going to try to avoid them by using an aero screen instead.

Never really considered the cat theft angle. Suppose I could put a guard over it, would help with burns as well, but think I'll just leave it at this point. Regardless of what I do, it's likely either 30 seconds with a saw or 60. It will be parked inside overnight, so hopefully they won't get cut off in the parking lot.

Well, I'm not sure I could realistically be happier with how this turned out. Decided to install the rivets along the top on the outter edge as the cover will obscure them all anyway.

Very nice and clean looking. Will you be adding a license plate light and plate mount?

You know I gotta ask this, I'm on the edge on my seat here, 'is that an elephant laying in the back boot area or is your car just happy to see ya?'

You'll find that as you get to my age "the happy thing" is wishful thinking, but what the 'ell, at least I'm still thinking about it!

Well, I'm closer to half your age than not and it took me more than a second to realize what you were talking about in your first post.
