Thank you Sam for the Fiat/ gap pics.. seems like a nice compromise to add a touch of safety to an older car, without bolting on a big plastic brake light bubble up onto the rear deck- nice!

These few pics show how I've glued on a thin SS strip with blind nuts to allow the license plate to be mounted into the new recess... I've found either Loctite or 3M "Marine" adhesive works well for odd things like this (metal to fiberglass)..

In the For Sale/ WTB section of this board I recently posted my need to have a part made on a lathe (a tool I'm sorely lacking)... A big THANK YOU to both gto7419 and DaveM with offers make the part for me.. How Nice!! Gto is going to crank this little gem out for me, which will help clean up the huge gap I have between the end of the steering column and where the quick-release steering wheel mounts. This gap is the result of me reworking the column too many times, and the eyesore is the result. The plastic piece will serve no purpose other than to make things cleaner.. Thanks gto7419!

The car's lower corners..

This car was made with a full belly pan (Berkeley called it a Punt).. Generally I like the shape of this car's body, but the lower front and rear corners can be cleaned up a bit I think.

Recently I decided to omit the front lower corners (the front part of the punt) and simply not install it. In doing this, I'll have to go back later and finish out the lower grille a little bit, but it should turn out nicely..

The focus for now is on the rear lower corners. This is for sure me being picky about this aspect of the car, but it bugs me how chunky the lower rear corners look as stock. I'm doing two things to minimize the blocky look back there. The first was to paint this lower body section black.. Once the upper body goes to color, it will help to pull the eye up and away from the rear undertray.. The other thing I'm doing is reshaping the sides of the rear lower corners.. Super fussy, I know, but I think they'd look better with a gentle arc going under the body.. When standing next to the car, I think this minor tweak will help the bottom of the car 'disappear' in a more graceful way.. Details like this will really slow a build down, but my tiny brain will not let this go

These pics are to show the part of the car I'm talking about...

The cutting begins.. the popsicle stick helps show what I intend to do, albeit with a slight curve (this car has very few straight surfaces).

This doesn't belong here, but if it keeps just one potential customer from buying "AAA" auto insurance, then I'll be happy. The following is a copy/ paste from a post I made over in the 'Automotive Talk' forum.. I'm usually a positive person, and it's pretty hard to get a rise out of me, but this sure did:

===========================

I'm so pissed!! We switched all of our cars over to 'AAA' auto insurance last year-- all was well, as I paid the annual premium up front.. It just rolled over (now it's year 2), and we're being charged a 'finance fee' of $46 for the privilege of making monthly payments.. $46.00 a month, EVERY MONTH.. You have got to be kidding?!!

They're not kidding.. I'll be cancelling my auto, my home, and my AAA membership (roadside assistance), all because of these silly games and junk fees :BH: ...This $46/mo is a 'normal fee' they tell me.. Not for me it's not!! F**K you AAA!..

So.. I know these things are highly subjective, but do you have an auto insurer that you use that has reasonable premiums and doesn't play junk-fee games? I don't like being jerked around, and this stupid, stupid policy has just set me off..

We have several cars, good driving records, and I'll even bundle homeowners if it makes sense..

Recommendations?

Thanks-

--ccrrunner

**my project/ play car will be insured with Grundy.. (I had my 63 Volvo P1800 with Grundy @ agreed upon value.. they were wonderful to deal with)

I have progressive for my car, motorcycle, and home. Decent rates and they have roadside assistance, which I have had to use on the motorcycle. Dunno if the included roadside is from me being customer for 15+ years, or if you'd have to pay extra.

Edit: Also, good work, I'm enjoying watching the build progress and transform.

Thank you for checking in kabuku6.. I think what I'm learning is this 'finance fee' can be avoided if I pay the annual cost up front.. I just wish that had been explained when I switched over.. not knowing about these fees has tacked on over $400 a year for nothing tangible.. woof! Also, I'm glad you're following the build! Please do chime in whenever you wish

Not much progress this weekend. I did some trimming on the rear punt section and I started to glass in the opposite rear corner (this reshaping will take several steps to accomplish.. it's pretty fragile as-is)..

The other thing I did was to bolt the rear body section on and take her for a spin with the new tires, alignment, and recently altered intake.. Went up the freeway for about 30 miles and then turned around.. She did well.. I have a slight rub at the driver's rear corner, but it's minor, and easily trimmed out..

Here are a few pics as she sits today on the track tires..

I still get a chuckle when a photo of the Berk is posted along with a modern car.
It looks like a jumbo power wheels next to the Escape.
Most of the shots, with nothing for perspective, make the Berk seem bigger.

Looks really good on those tyres - the 3/4-rear view looks impressive.
I'm now receiving regular updates - don't know if i did something right, or whether someone saw my plight and rectified it.
If the former, I'm surprised - if the latter, I'm grateful...

Do you ever video yourself at work - for YouTube, maybe...? I do appreciate it would be a LOT more time consuming.

Best wishes, MangPong

Glad the updates are working now MangPong 8) ..I've thought about posting construction videos, and I'm appreciative of those that take the time to do it, but it's not for me.. I'd end up spending way too much time on it as I know it would become an obsession..

2-8-2023

I have one rub spot with the bigger tires, which was expected, as I need to create a fiberglass blister in the body- there is just enough room to do this..

Last pic shows that the 'street' wheels are now fully welded and ready to go to powdercoating..

Looking good

I can't help but notice, you sure do like to repeat that creamy white wheel color on your cars.

Thank you Chuck... I do seem to have a type, don't I?

---------------------------------

2-13-2023

A few odds and ends are taking shape.. The top pic shows the Berkeley OEM nose emblem.. It's about 60mm across, and I was toying with finding 4 of these and making them my hubcap wheel centers for my street wheels... that plan was quickly nixed as I've learned that these emblems are very hard to find. I'll have to figure out what plan B will be for the street wheels/ hubcaps..

As for the lower rear punt (rear body undertray), I'm almost done reworking this piece. At this stage I used chicken wire, duct tape, and spackle paste to form the compound curves as I reshaped this piece.

Finally, a little more fiberglass work to form blisters in the body behind the seat(s) to make room for the wider set of track tires..
