Their website can be a little confusing, but if you poke around you'll find some good stuff. The exact light I'm using as my 3rd brake light is the 95 LED 12.20" version down their page at bit.. super slim and super bright. I used these on my N600 build as taillights, and I'm currently running one on my 1800 as a stealth 3rd brake light. Gives me peace of mind that I'm more easily seen- I have an almost inappropriate fear of being rear-ended

ccrunner,
Perfect, thank you! I will make an order, they look great.

Pricing on those is really reasonable.
May reserve that link as an option for a 3rd brake light on the Rotus.

Some Sorta Sorting..

Got the rear plate area worked out, which allowed me to be sort-of road legal again.. Now that I have the plate back on, seems a good idea to take it out for a sunset cruise and find new problems.. On this trip out, all went pretty well except for the shifting.. it started out nice and loose; easy to shift, but became tighter and almost reluctant to shift as the brief drive went on.. A bit of a head scratcher as I eventually took it home and parked it. Sitting in the garage I tried to pinpoint the issue.. overtightened linkage? dry morse cable? a physical impedance? Couldn't put my finger on it until this morning when I walked by the car on my way out to work... For grins. I reached in and tried to shift it where it sat with a stone-cold dead motor. Shifted like butter.. Easy peasy..

So what changed between last night and this morning? You guessed it; heat. I'm just guessing at this point, but I'm pretty sure my morse shifter cable is expanding down near the side of the case as she comes up to temperature- that's my theory anyway.. Today (4-29) I ordered a universal DEI cable insulator.. hopefully that will cure my newfound tight-when-hot shifter issues

Other than the shifter, the car is running well. I have little issues here and there (i.e. the tires are rubbing at the rear inside wheel wells- more body trimming needed.. little stuff at this point.. It was a nice sunset drive in an ugly car- good times 8)

Those first two pics look oddly like a Cobra, without a sense of scale.

Reminds me of the old tale of the ugly duckling. It is going to be a beauty!

When these were new there was sot of dealer in KC (I grew up there). Had one on the showroom. Had my Alfa at the time but couldn't resist checking ot the pretty little car. Chuckled at the fact that I could sit in the driver's seat and shut the passenger door.

Lookin good Dean!

Cheers!

I'm with you guys... I know I'm biased, but I see the beauty in her too.. I also see an awful lot of Cobra in there, particularly the rear 3/4 angle.. Over the years I've worked on a bunch of different makes, and each brings it's own character, but I've never worked on one quite like this.. I know she'll never be objectively 'pretty,' but if you'll forgive the silly metaphor, she reminds me of the quirky girl that intrigues you, and becomes more and more attractive the more you get to know her- she's got a magnetism you can't quite pin down, but it's very real.. That's my little Berkeley, at least to me

Finishing the Steering Wheel

Finally got to the last step on this little hodge-podge steering wheel. The leather cover was made by "Wheelskins," and I can't recommend them enough. You give them your custom measurements for a one off wheel like this one, or model/make/year if you're running a stocker, and they'll get you a cover that fits like a glove. I didn't necessarily want to cover this wheel, but it's powder coated and does not have ridges, so it's too smooth/slick without a cover (particularly if I wear gloves).

The cover was a bit of work to put on, but the finished product turned out nicely.. grippy now.. feels good in your hands..

*This company has a VERY fast turnaround on your order.. also, the ones I've ordered have been custom sizes for one-off wheels, and they've fit perfectly; these are not the old 'spiral lace' universal covers you remember. I put one of these on my Honda N600, now on this car, and I have one on the shelf that's going on my reduced-diameter Volvo 1800 wheel in the near future.. I'm not a paid spokesperson, but I should be

Nice work, that looks fantastic.

Never heard a bad report on wheelskins.

Do you use a baseball stitch on this?

I prefer these covers but they are pretty expensive these days. I'm guessing the custom size was about $50?

Basically a leather loop sewn with a french fell so the id is a tight fit to the wheel od. The sides are folded over so the width is 3/8" less than the wheel circumference, then holes pierced. The lacing is heavy cord waxed to reduce friction when pulling the lacing tight but it is just looped, not baseball stitch.

The spiral loop cheaper foam vinyl covers can look ok. Only problem with the skins is if the spokes are particularly wide, leaving an unlaced edge.

I've seen a few 50s covers that were just spiraled rope.

On the cover.. I can't remember the cost.. maybe $60.00 I think.. Stitch is in fact a basic loop.. pulling the stitch tight is key- it takes a few times to learn to get it right..

The erratic stalling is back :BH: , and now that I've resolved it I feel so stupid that it happened at all

Even though I've bypassed the tipover sensor, there are still problems.. The car would run great, but would fully cut out (like an electrical 'kill' ;all at once) either with an aggressive, quick turn, or seemingly when it got the revs up past 6.5k... I learned this as I took it out on the 101 freeway.. exceed 6.5k rpms.. sputter.. die.. // pull over- find neutral, restart, gear up, up, up, but exceed 6.5k, and full electrical shutdown.. // pull off/ neutral/ restart/ repeat.. I learned quickly to short shift it and make slow turns to limp it home.. This issue made no sense?!!..

Once at home, out of sheer desperation I started taking the firewall off just to see if something obvious would jump out; a loose ground? Rat-chewed wiring? ...Then I saw it.. Dangling down the side of the engine, right where I had left it (telling myself I'd go back and address it later), I found the kickstand position sensor just flopping around in the engine bay.. It's wired such that you can start the bike with the kickstand down, but if you put it in gear without putting the kickstand up, the bike immediately dies. THAT was my problem (it never was the tipover sensor).. this little sensor was banging around (quick turn kill), and maybe the vibrations at 6.5k+ also triggered it to kill the motor.. At any rate, I did what I should have originally done, and I pulled the sensor altogether and joined the wires, allowing the engine to think the kickstand is always up.. Now that I've hard-wired past it, the car runs flawlessly. Duh, duh, duh!!

..Things aren't lining up..

I'm not too concerned by the revelation that the body panels on this old glass car aren't lining up, but it's interesting to note just how very far off things are..

Again, this ugly body just serves to keep me out on the road for mechanical sorting, but wow, that's one drafty door!

In Consideration of Anyone Over 5'8" Tall

These are small cars; that's part of their charm. I'm 6'2", and it's very tight.. I know I've mentioned it repeatedly, but there are several mods to make the interior of this car livable for a taller driver. The hard work and time spent is paying off; I'm more comfortable and 'stretched out' in this Berkeley than I am in my wife's ND Miata (which may not be saying much  )..

So here are too many pictures of the 'interior' body mods needed to move the seat(s) back 3".. An additional concern is that at full bump, the rear wheels intrude into the newly channeled body.. tight tight tight.... I will go back soon and make a pair of small fiberglass blisters where the tires need a bit of clearance. Again, this is my test-mule body.. I'm working at things like this to see how many of these mods make it over to the 'final' (red) body.

last few pics.. It's very unlikely this thing will ever see full bump in the rear, but if it does, the tires will clear the body..
