The size... I'm getting used to the small stature of the Berkeley, but it is ALWAYS the small size that is the first comment when someone sees it..

The trip... 5 years ago I'd have driven it up to Reno (you know, way back when I was young and dumb), but at 8.5 hours each way, I took the easy path and trailered it up.. once I got it there, I did drive it a bit regionally though; made the loop out of Reno and down around Lake Tahoe (took about 5 hours with several stops.. a beautiful drive if you have the time).. I also took a trek out of Reno over to Virginia City (about 35 mins one way).. FUN road getting there; a neat little 'old west' town with several very old structures still intact-- if you like the late 1800s/turn of the century period, you'll groove on this little time-warp town.

-------

The pics below: A damn big bee! Found this guy in downtown Sparks as part of an art display sprinkled about.. // Took a pic inside my candy store, aka Summit Racing in Reno.. my normal interface with them is through their website, so it was nice to see what their brick and mortar store looks like.. There was A LOT of $$ spent in that store just in the brief time I was there.. // Here's a first-person shot of the famed "Downtown Reno Cruise" they host every night.. lots of vintage car fans come out to watch the old iron parade.. // Here's a wideshot of the daytime downtown Reno show and shine.. not a very good pic, and the air was yucky and thick with haze (big fires to the west in California).. // Finally, in all of these years, all of these builds, all of these car shows, I've never seen a 'Creepy White Van" as part of an event, but to be honest, I kinda liked it

Hot August Nights, Reno, NV (Aug 5-8, 2021)

It's sad that I now walk right past concourse-restored 34 Fords and gleaming Tri-Fives to admire a tiny right hand drive ice cream truck as seen in the first pic, but I've learned I'm a sucker for the odd stuff. This little unrestored delight from my childhood brought back all sorts of pleasant summer memories.. damn, I'm getting old :? // The famed city where badass Johnny Cash once shot a man just to watch him die.. The Reno Arch spans a downtown street, and again, reminds of a time gone by. I want to pause here and make sure I don't oversell Reno.. it's a little city that happens to host a monster-big annual car show that I like, but don't let all of the romanticism sway you, this place has it's issues.. // Now here's something you might never see again- a Tri-5 12-passenger 'Limo'.. again, I'm drawn to the weird, and this little, ahem, big car is firmly in that club. // I also love those with a sense of humor, like this guy, driving a land barge, not afraid to tell the world that he's paying nearly 5 dollars to go every 9 miles  // In Sparks, NV (the next town adjacent to Reno), they have "The Nugget Casino." This one-tooth giant, known as "Last Chance Joe," is the public face of the company... I'm betting he's the guy driving that white van

A few more from HAN...

This Jeep FC made for the perfect beer truck/ calling card for this brewery.. // The rear bumper on this red F100 is a treatment for a truck rear bumper that I've never seen.. OEM contours smoothed out end to end- beautiful! (the rest of the truck was gorgeous top to bottom- a ton of work and creativity on this little Ford.. // The third pic is just a pretty, sleek car.. I'm sorry, but I can't remember what it is.. long, lithe, low- pure grace.. not the era I usually gravitate toward, but this gem really stood out

..last few pics coming up..

Great pictures! Sounds like a fantastic trip, very cool and your car was one of the cool ones :D. Thank you for sharing the pictures and your trip. I’m not sure I’d do that trip to Reno in your car either. But then I’m planning a cross country Rt66 trip next year in my MGiata if it is ready to go by then.

That is an Auburn Boattail Speedster.

Definitely one of my favorites. Love Cords too.

Cheers,
Eric

Last few pics from Hot August Nights 2021..

First pic is a car I've seen before, but I love it.. a 260Z Scarab.. a rare little Z with a nasty sounding V8 motor.. It's a real Scarab (fakes/clones are an issue in Scarab circles).. sweet little car, and a very cool owner.. // This won't be for everyone, but I LOVE the metalwork on the nose of this Firebird.. so slick! I found the whole build interesting and inspirational  // LBCs were thin on the ground at this show, but I stumbled upon this very clean little Bugeye.. super-sano build.. stood out to me in the sea of mostly American vintage hardware.. // Last but not least, on the last night of the show, this diesel ratrod came and parked next to me.. it may not look it in the pic, but it's really big in person (particularly the tires and wheels).. A cool build that always had a crowd.

So that's it.. good times

..I'm a little burned out, as I always am after being in the garage all summer.. In the next many weeks school starts back in person, and my Volvo 1800 goes up for auction.. I'm not sure what I'll do to the Berk next (or even when), but I've got the never ending list of mods I want to go back and chase, and I've recently begun to think of modding her to be a legit race car (fuel cell/ roll bar/ etc. etc.) while still keeping it street legal- not sure about that yet.. First I need to see how the Volvo does, then a brief break from the car stuff, then back on the Berk in earnest

That Scarab's a looker.

I got a spin in a SBC 240Z in college. Fun car, but was a quite rough unfinished project.

9-2-21

Hey guys.. I'm posting up here in the event that you follow my builds and would find this of interest. I've listed my 63 Volvo 1800 on Bring a Trailer as of this morning (9-2-21).. link: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1963-volvo-p1800-7/

I don't have social media.. no twitter, no facebook, nothing.. If you do in fact have social media and you think you know someone who would like to know that the Volvo is up for sale, could you link it/ help spread the word? I don't sell my stuff very often, so I appreciate your help in getting the word out.

*The auction ends Thursday, September 9th, 2021, at 11:10 AM Pacific Time

Thanks guys-

Hot mamba, that's pulling in some good bids!

I'm wondering what the new owner will think about the build log.

Great pics! The berk is so far out of the box for most people, I doubt they can appreciate it.

"127 HP long block".
Why do I immediately envision snapping the axles?
My idea of a modern bike engine conversion has always been Yamaha RD400 or KZ Mk. III? 500cc three cylinder two-strokes.
Surely all the power increase the original axles could possibly tolerate and enough to scare you every day.

Thank you CJY for posting that here.. maybe someone will be inspired to pick it up(?) 8)

I'm with you RichardSIA, but in addition to snapped axles, I'm thinking the whole car would snap.. There is no 'real' frame in a Berkeley; they're shockingly fragile in their design.. 127hp in this would simply break the car apart.. Not to despair though, a person could fab together a frame and hang this little cutie body on it- then they could proceed to be terrified by it every day

I think the "Smart Money" for that one is to dig up it's competition history and restore it to Vintage Racer status.
I did own a Berkley a few decades ago, pretty complete except missing engine.
How do you trade a worthless car for an even more worthless vehicle?
Trade it for a boat! :ack:
