Well I finally started, seems I'm treated as a Lurker so here goes with my own log.

Took delivery of two very cheap Honda GL500's today, both in dire need of attention having been neglected for years. They will at least provide the rear suspension/wheel, if the engine(s) are scrap will serve as build templates. Sadly one had only 7000 miles on it.

Spike has been very good and provided help and guidance to get me started. After stripping the bikes I will build a table similar to the one in Spikes Blog.

Welcome, I look forward to watching.
Even if you may be repulsed by the tarp covered velorex in general, it’s worth checking out this cx/gl500 based velorex replica with vw bug beam:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=np0oAJSZLdw

viewtopic.php?f=32&t=16054

Also Robbovious’s B3 build:
viewtopic.php?f=36&t=13941

I’ve seen many bike builds using the velorex config but with vw beam. Very practical and a quicker build than trying to get the driveshaft right. A Subaru fwd trans or vw transaxle (i.e. Merlin) with flipped diff adapted to fit a bike engine are also practical and more performance oriented that front engine, rwd (i.e. 80’s Tri-hawk that used French 2cv driveline). Amazing variety of options for a reverse trike. Hard to choose but personal preference wins!

Mike here,
As the Profile section is not working I thought I had better introduce myself to you all.

I was born and raised in the UK, spent 13 years in the Royal Air Force and eventually ended up in Florida after 7 years in Saudi Arabia. My first car project started there building a NG TF from MGB parts.
I am retired from flying the world as a B-747 (Classic) Flight Engineer for Kalitta Air. As well as Flight Instructing for 3500 hours I am an A&P Mechanic. Located in Vero Beach, FL

Projects completed:

NG TF using MG B parts.
Olds F85 215 ci V8 in a MGB Roadster
GM 3.4 V6 in a MGB GT
GM Corvette LS1 in a Porsche 944

Sorry the pictures are in reverse order.

Finally my MG J2 back in 1965

About 15 years ago I wanted to build a JZR 3 wheeler using a Honda CX500, I purchased the bike but demands of aviation put an end to that project.

So a new era, a new project.

Have to save the Formula Ford track car and a 750 Suzuki Mini Sprint for another time.

Well Mike (taking a leap here from FlierMike) welcome to the site. You'll fit right in here especially if you post lots of pictures. Sounds like you have a great skillset to bring to this project, will be looking forward to following your build.
I've always admired guys that defy gravity but Mike I must tell you that no matter how light or fast you're gonna build this Morgan 3 wheeler...........it ain't gonna fly

Great pics and workmanship.

I like these also. Same config as the merlin/sparrow but more morganny:

Hoping to be able to justify buying wood and steel again in a couple years. :BH:

Richard Oakes designer and maker retired in June 2013. Since that time Blackjack zero kits have been unavailable.

I have looked at Reverse Trike designs for years, I have excluded motorcycle rear engine designs because it messes up the weight distribution and wheel base is way longer than optimal.

Front engine is likely and I believe the best way to go. FWD or RWD is a drivers choice I would choose FWD to simplify the build.

Another challenge to the builder is motorcycle options do not have reverse except GL1500 and up.

NOTE: A shaft drive MC power plant can be divorced from the rear suspension and mounted in front to favorably relocate that weight.

Also a 550cc motor will be a fairly pedestrian performer, I'm going to want at least 75 hp and gobb's of torque, I can see why Morgan makes the motor choices it does.

Many motorcycle trans are not up to the task of doubling the chassis weight and loading, clutch baskets seem to be the first weak link.

A Harley style motor has a dry sump oiling system and will not be affected by "spirited" driving.

One of my favorite trikes was the Malone Skunk (sadly not made anymore) out of the UK. It used a front mounted MC motor with a strange driveshaft arrangement to the rear wheel. It was one of the best looking trikes out there. Russ

According to the Wiki link below the correct name for a tricycle with two wheels at the front and one at the rear is a TADPOLE TRICYCLE , the other configuration is a Delta Tricycle.

Evidently even Wikipedia has problems with your absolute definition of a trike.

Image

Both 1F2R & 2F1R (the later is sometimes referred to as a reverse trike, but a trike none the less) vehicles are still trikes as far as both I and Shakespeare are concerned.

In the automobile world , reverse means to go in the opposite direction of travel from what is normal.

As I plan to build a replica Morgan then I will use their own terminology to describe the configuration of my project, its a "3 Wheeler" period.

https://www.morgan-motor.com/3-wheeler/

Thank you.........LOL

According to wiki? Very funny Mike! There is also the new regulatory definition for anything with less than four wheels and a steering wheel versus a handbar, mostly caused by the Trex accident rate imho. I think I read that in the National Inquirer.
