I'm looking at buying an old Kellison Dune Buggy since I am surrounded by dirt roads and do not want to go the hassle of building a 4x4.
Old VW based buggies are pretty simple. :)
It's an odd body, MG TD mixed with Meyers Manx.
But I like unique, and MG.
The point I need to figure out is that the title is lost, it's an estate sale, the plates are also lost, and I'm told it has been of the road so long that it is "No longer in the system" anyway.
I escaped that miserable state decades ago so am no longer current on how bad the hoops are there now.
I see a lot of adds for old cars in CA that make a point of stating "No longer in the system" as some sort of advantage and reason to buy.

I would like to keep this a simple get it running project rather than have to buy a titled Bug and put this body on it.
So any clues as to how much headache I am looking at to replace the title would be appreciated.
I would contact CA DMV but I know it's best to not make any statements or ask questions that can be used to makelife harder later.
They used to try to trick me into saying my project cars had touched the road, so additional fee's would be due!

Is it old enough to qualify as a historic vehicle in Nevada? If so, maybe you'd be better off talking with the Nevada DMV and see if you can bring it into that state with just a bill of sale and create an "original" Nevada title for it.

I don't know what "No longer in the system" means in DMV speak. Maybe do a search on that term on the California DMV website?

Cheers,

It's been a while since I've had to deal with Cal-DMV, but about 20years ago I bought an old V-Dub that was "NLITS". I took what paperwork I had to the Barstow office and all that was involved was filling out a few extra forms, and paying the fee. I walked out with a "Temp" title and received a new "Pink" a few weeks later. Of course, this was two decades ago, and Commiefornia is always coming up with new ways to mess with their subjects! Why not just talk to the folks at NV-DMV first. You may be able to bypass Cal altogether.

Good luck!!!

I think they keep vehicles on the active registration logs for 10 years from the last registration, so the new owner could pay up to 10 years of fees when they attempt to register.
After 11 years, those fees are dropped (I think).

If I title in Nevada first I'm pretty sure I end up with either one of the "Special" type registrations and it's very limited mileage, or registered as a 2019 Special Construction and all current requirements are required.
No smog check in my county, but do not want the "Third Eye" brake light, heavy bumpers, etc.

If I can get a CA title and then register as just a used car I avoid all the limitations and updates. :D

When I got the VIN for my Locost from the CHP (five years ago now), there were a dozen other vehicles there also getting VINs. Mine was the only SB100. The rest were a mishmash of custom motorcycles, trucks, and off-road vehicles that the owners were getting licensed for street use.
