I am contemplating building a three wheeler in California. I believe that I need receipts for major components. I would like to use a motorcle engine that I have owned for years. Unfortunately I no longer have a receipt for it. Does the DMV have some process to deal with this?
TIA
Tony

Tony-
I don't think the DMV will have much of a problem with this; just explain the situation to them. They need the receipts in order to access a tax upon the vehicle. I'm guessing they will just ask for your estimate of the cost of the engine. Calif. form 5036 seems to handle this situation. It gives you the opportunity to state you don't have a receipt for the engine and explain why. You also need to visit the CHP for a VIN check, assuming the engine has a VIN. They are checking to make sure the engine wasn't stolen. They will issue you a new VIN for the car.

Good luck with the build and the process.
Roy
