SEMA Legislative Alert
Montana Pro-Hobbyist Street Rod and Custom Vehicle Bill Signed Into Law

URGENT LEGISLATIVE ALERT (UPDATE)

Congratulations! SEMA model legislation (S.B. 507) introduced in the Montana Legislature by State Senator John Brueggeman to create vehicle titling and registration classifications for street rods and custom vehicles was signed into law by Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer. S.B. 507 defines a street rod as an altered vehicle manufactured before 1949 and a custom as an altered vehicle at least 25 years old and manufactured after 1948. Under the new law, kit cars and replica vehicles will be assigned a certificate of title bearing the same model year designation as the production vehicle it most closely resembles.

The new law:
bullet Provides specific registration and titling classes for street rods and customs, including kits and replicas.
bullet Allows for the use of non-original materials and creates a titling criterion that assigns these vehicles the same model year designation as the production vehicle it most closely resembles.
bullet Permits street rods and customs to display a single license plate, attached to the rear exterior.
bullet Permits street rods and custom vehicles to display blue dot taillights.

Congratulations again to all of the Montana hobbyists whose hard work and perseverance made this new law a reality.
