Can honeycomb mesh be welded to strengthen body panels?
Image

I guess it must be welded only on the inside section, thus keeping borders free for strong riveting or welding.
Of course time consuming and careful welding is required to weld to the thin sheet metal.

What about welding sheets already reinforced with honeycomb mesh?
Are such sheets available? In steel? Aluminum?

Honeycomb is normally bonded to the face sheets (typically aluminum sheet, fiberglass, or carbon fiber) with some sort of epoxy. Honeycomb panels are very strong in bending (load perpendicular to the panel) but not very strong when the load is parallel to the panel which is how a chassis would typically load it. Caterham uses panels like this for side impact protection - it is actually a pretty good use since it takes advantage of the panel's properties.
