I was trying to look at some proportions with an old midi drawing I have. In the 908 they sit the driver like in a formula car so the feet can go between the wheels. How much of a need do you see for a passenger?

I will try to build like the original car. It had a small jump seat but I will make some more room.
And yes the feet will be just behind the front tires. In the 908-3 they were maybe 3" ahead +- ?

Hi and welcome to our nuthouse JustJack!

That's a great picture and it speaks volumes about the 1970 state of art. There's lots of things to talk about in that picture, so I'm having trouble deciding where to start.

From B85's point of view though there is the safety issue of the driver's feet. This is about the year that regulations where changed to require the driver to be completely behind the front wheel centerline. I don't think you can really avoid that - it's going to be hard to run the car anywhere at all if you don't do that. So in the picture you could simply remove the front bay of the frame, that's what my formula car looks like, the frame stops at the front wheel centerline.

Another consideration is if the control arms can punch through to your legs. So you could have the longer leg facing backwards or forwards. When I looked at this it seemed you would build a box on the front of the cockpit frame to take the suspension, but especially in your case you can just use a more narrow standard frame at the front. So here is a working diagram of a Car9 midi where the frame is narrowed to about Super 7 width in the cockpit ( 36" ? ) and the engine bay has been removed. I have not moved the wishbones or wheels or pickups etc. so you can see how the driver's feet interact with a suspension and the steering rack etc.

You can probably retain 13" wheels if you go for vintage Formula Atlantic and Ford car parts. You could get vented front rotors in your wheel. I'm not sure if any Atlantic cars got the upright inside the wheel, you have to look for pictures.... I wanted 13", fought for 15" and landed up with 17" for my car.

You can obviously drive the car with that much steering offset but there are risks. The word on the NorthEast hillclimb scene 30 years ago was that you could get into a lot of trouble when you got near the edges of the road. There were some cars showing up that were refugees from oval tracks and this was a painful lesson people were learning. You can see in that picture you need strength, reflexes and mental ability to completely memorize a course - in abundance and then a substantial dose of courage and confidence to drive a 908.

NASA will let me do track day's and that will be good.

At this time I will just try to make it fit under the body and make the frame look like the 908-3

Thanks for the photo. I have about 150+ so far on my looking. But keep them comeing.
Just wish I could find a demetion drawing ?

That picture of the 908 chassis reminded me of a statement I've seen credited to Ivor Bueb and/or Graham Hill:
"I shall be seated frightfully close to the accident."

Been thinking about a different motor. What about a Chevy L92 (LS3 fanily) all alum. About 425 Lbs.+-
Reason, move bell-housings to pick from. And more drawings to work from. It is not a Flat 8 but it is 8.

Let me know what you think ?

And Happy New Year.

Hi B85, are you in need of dimensions drawing of a real 908/3 frame ?
and why don't you go for an easy setup, just buy an US Porsche Boxter, then you have so many reusable parts,
you can have a good compleet Boxter 986 for the price of an SBC ?

Thanks, its a idea but my Wife has a 2000 Boxster S and is a good car but nothing like a 908-3.

But I have been looking at a old build of ,BB69's. And the setup may be something to look into ?
Don't know about a a auto but did find some T56 info that could work with a L92 ?
Going to do some more looking.

I believe an scca legal car can have the pedals inline with the front of the front wheels. The steering rack could then be positioned above the drivers legs (not a lot of clearance getting in and out) or could be placed below the drivers legs with more room above (Stohr P1/P2 Sports racer). This keeps good ackerman geometry and minimizes interference with the front wheels. Custom uprights would need to be fabricated most likely.
