In addition to my build, A friend is prepping his Locost for the track, and I'm encouraging him to add some protection. Here's the basic jist of what I'm going to recommend (The picture is of my old car, not his)


My question is how to attach it. It's easy enough to weld in everything with permanent connections, OTOH it would be nice to have the thing removable as well. I've been looking for hard data about removable attachment techniques and their relative strengths. Here's a picture of a more elaborate build than what I have in mind, but it is useful for illustration.



I'd love feedback and technical references, if possible.

Best that I have seen in reference to removable roll cage components is the SCCA GCR
where it shows the acceptable means for attaching said components. It as discusses the restrictions for roll cage design in order to pass inspection. I plan on referencing it often when I build my structure.

There are weld-in tube joiners specifically made for roll cages:



That's ^ a small one but they go right up to the biggest size you'd use for a roll cage. Very strong and not expensive.

Dan installed slugs into the frame rails so you can bolt on the case, works well.

Thanks. That's about how I figured it would be done. I wonder how sanctioning bodys feel about it?

Dan the builder runs a race shop so this is an approved technique. He uses special slugs that exactly fit inside a 1" square tube.
