Dale's thread about rust removal reminded me of Gibbs Penetrant, a penetrant that is popular in the hot rod market for protecting unpainted metal parts, notably mag wheels. Car museums also use it for parts that cannot be painted for authenticity's sake. It doesn't become sticky like WD40, and can allegedly be used for temporary protection, then painted over. There are some lower prices out there.

I bookmarked it for use on such things as the alternator casing, FI plenum, and suspension fasteners. It would certainly be better than nothing for aluminum body panels, though I'd like to try POR 15's Clisten PC for that purpose.
