Can someone enlighten me about hoses and routing? My Haynes and Chilton Miata and Focus manuals are essentially useless in this respect. There is an outlet behind the thermostat that connects to a hose which runs to a fitting on the back of the engine, which looks to me like the coolant bypass for when the thermostat is closed. There is also a small outlet on the thermostat body that I expect is for a hose to the heater, but I do not see where the coolant reenters the engine after leaving the heater.

You just need a pipe off the hot side, I.e. pre-thermostat pre-raditator. That then return to the cool side i.e. post radiator pre water pump. Think of it as a little secondary radiator, because it is! Your water pump will make sure there is adaquete flow.

Correction to my earlier post. There is a plastic manifold on the back of the head the coil packs sit on that has two pipes to connect to, one being the heater hose. See this link posted by Brust in the other duratec topic for pics of the water necks:

Something to watch for is to insure that the heater is not in the thermostat bypass circuit, as a heater valve would block bypass flow which is critical.

Bypass flow is critical so the head does not develop hot spots or steam pockets during warm up when the tstat is closed, it maintains coolant flow in the motor and helps average the temps during warm up.

Looks like there are two thin bypass lines, #8 and part of the upper hose #9.
