Looking around the shelves to see what I might be able to sell after getting the latest machine shop bill. :ack:
So wondering if these RX7 trans are useful to anyone other than those using Rotaries?
I know some stuff interchanges from model to model and even across brands, but the alphabet soup of modern models loses me PDQ.

Follow on question, what would I expect these to SELL for fairly quickly?

I believe that any 13B RX is compatible with any of their trans, possibly with some slight modification.

Found recently that my FC trans will work on a Renesis from an RX-8. Keeping that in my back pocket, if the engine that came with mine turns out non-rebuildable.

I've seen some mention that the early (NA/NB) Miata is compatible, but have seen that it takes a bellhousing swap (or maybe adapter plate?)

I'm not well versed on the RX gearboxes, but if this it true then adapter plates are readily available ( https://www.rx8gearboxadapters.com/ ) to bolt them up to a bunch of different engines. I'm using an RX8 6 speed behind a Zetec using one of the plates.

There are some Mitsubishi bells that bolt to Mazda transmissions, and vice verse, but it's all oddball old stuff.
Seems it's B2600 pickup bell on RX7 trans to go to wideblock Mitsubishi 4g6x engine.

Some people never have anything except ideas. Go do it.
Emissions & fuel economy haven't exactly been areas of strength for past rotary power plants, but absolutely no one with a soul has ever cared.

Seems there are 4 and 5 speed versions.
Without taking anything apart, how do I tell which I have?
Have not found a shift lever yet, still looking.

The second gen NA 5-speeds have "smooth" cases, as shown by the SA and FB comparison pic.
The second and third gen turbo have "ribbed" case 5-speeds, as shown by the second pic.
The RX2, 3, 4 "ribbed" cases are 4-speeds and don't have the section between the blue lines on the turbo 5-speed pic.
The reverse on the 4-speed is over to the right and back. So, without a lever, a 4-speed rail block would be moved left and up. Engage that position and rotate the shaft to confirm output shaft reverse rotation.

I see no mention of pilot bearings. Generally the bell adapter sets up the correct location of the release bearing but these look just thick enough to prevent interference. Do they come with detailed instruction or what you see is what you get? Have you setup yours yet?

The adapter plate comes with two "dowels" that double as nuts, that's about it. But, the guy who sells them does provide details (via email or on various forums) on what's required to fit the various motors. Some require machining to the bellhousing lip to keep things in the right spot, others just require some minor grinding to the area around the starter motor. For the Zetec setup you retain the Focus flywheel, pressure plate, disc, and fit an off the shelf "generic" pilot bearing (BCA# NBFC65354, SKF FC65354, etc), and use the release bearing, fork, and slave from the RX8. The Aisin gearbox input shaft has the same spline size/count as the Ford disc, and has a .590" nose.

Mine is in the car, though I haven't run it yet.

OK, that is what I have.
Wonder what sort of power they survive?
Trying to not go off on any more tangents* so need to sell these.
Worth $100.00 each?

*Hmm, maybe adapt to........

Looks pretty similar to the 5MT in my garage. Just need the Dorito spinner reassembled to mate them back together.
Image

Have seen a few FB 5MTs on Craigslist locally for 1-200.

Way down the line, might consider dropping in a Renesis & maybe a 6MT, if they won't require fabbing a new driveshaft. Otherwise, maybe a Renesis & keep the current 5MT.

"Wonder what sort of power they survive?"

Well, I've been putting 320 ft-lb TQ/380 WHP through a 2nd gen NA trans on a 1900 lb car (w/ driver), on slicks for a decade of AX seasons. This is an infrequent data point. A more representative peak on most courses is 280 ft-lb TQ/320 WHP.

^ Good knowledge to have.
Think my FC 5MT should be fine for a while.

I seem to remember some issue with starter placement on the bell housing, meaning that for some installations, it can be a pain.

Also, I thought that because the input shaft is pretty much at the center of the rotary engine, the transmission input shaft is as well, so the bottom of the transmission may hang down lower than is optimum if plugged into a piston engine.

Since no one's mentioned either issue, perhaps I'm "misremembering"

Many moons ago, I adapted a Mazda "ribbed" 4-speed to a dry-sumped Lotus 907 engine. The DS pan and the trans bottom were the same height.

It's in the Engines and Drivetrain Section.
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=13193#p133908

I can only say that it wasn't an issue with this combination, or the Mazda 1.8L BP engine that I adapted to a 2nd gen smooth case 5-speed.

YMMV

I accidentally ran my FC 5MT for about 50 miles as I recall before it started to make a bit of noise. I filled it up and it stopped making that noise. I drove it ~6k miles with no further incident before I sold it. If that isn't a a testament of it's durability...... FWIW, make sure you have access to the filler holes in your build. It is easy to overlook this simple feature.
