I was just thinking yesterday that it was strange no one ever made a replica of that car.
Only really good looking Mustang ever made.
This is an OLD mold, seller has had them since 1966, original, ?????

EDIT: Original is an aluminum body.

The molds look rough. But it could be a really cool car with a transverse 4 cyl powerplant and suspension from many modern front wheel drive cars. Or a Fiero or MR2 powerplant. Or even Honda Del Sol.

A nice tubular space frame would be pretty easy to construct to accept such a drivetrain.

Have to wonder how they originated and are they accurate?

Interesting article. And the video is a noce piece of propaganda as well. The more I look at it, the more it would need some redesign. Like raise the roll bar up, use a full height windshield, move the fuel tank away from the nose (crash safety), and make adjustable seats instead of adjustable pedals.

Also, a Porsche Boxster drivetrain might be a nice choice. And use the radiators from a late model Porsche 911 for the cooling.

But the molds would require a lot of work to pop out an initial form. Then you would most likely want to make a new set of modern molds for future bodies.

Plus I wonder what legal issues Ford might have with it being reproduced!

I have thought about starting a new business, but not sure this is the option.

This is getting strange.
The video shows the original molds being pulled from the Clay.
The concept shell was fiberglass.
The concept shell was used as a check fixture for TB to form the aluminum body used on the finished car.
Nowhere in that process is a steel mold mentioned.
But who other than Ford would have the resources to form steel into a mold?
A steel mold would seem to be meant for production, but the M-1 was never intended for production.

The nose is too long and I don't like the height, it's going to pack more air under the car than a Corvair! It needs some kind of a lip or chin to divide the air around the sides.

And the tires are way to skinny...... :^)

To be fair, the Craigslist ad doesn't claim to the THE mold, Just a mold. Nor does the Craigslist ad say it was steel. It is only implied by the one the Hill article. And the height of the roll bar met the racing requirements of 1962. I could see using that roll bar cover today as more of a headrest mounting surface. A year ago these molds were for sale on Grand Rapids Iowa Craigslist for $17K. The current ad's map shows NW of Milwaukee and just under 3K. Anybody smell a scam?


If it is THE mold made from the original wrapped clay model, It would have been made from plaster and excelsior.

Even IF one bought the molds and tried to sell a few bodies, do you think that Ford would come and file a copyright lawsuit? it might be better and more durable to make a body from scratch and pull a new, modern fiberglass mold from it.

I probably would have a hard time getting a car built like this registered in Illinois since there was no similar model sold back then. Trying to meet Specially Constructed Vehicle requirements would be much more difficult than a Seven type car under our Custom Vehicle classification.

Saw one of these on display at the 1967 Road America Can-Am in Elkhart Lake, WI. Along with a Chevy Mako Shark and a Weber carburated Camaro.

It was not practical looking. An intersting study though. Showed that they were thinking beyond sedans.
