For anyone curious, we're serving about 5 GB/day of traffic. Seems high for a small, non-video site.

Can you see what the high traffic is from?
Does seem high, but I don't know what is average for a forum.

@dhempy

Since I don't have experience with websites, Dave, I can't offer any opinion about the 5GB/day volume. However, since you mentioned LocostUSA was on an unlimited plan, I wonder (as you do) if the data volume is the real issue.

There are some users on here who have run websites. Maybe they can offer their opinion based on experience.

Regards,

IANAWP (I am not a website programmer :mrgreen: ) I just wonder if there are ways to automatically reduce the bandwidth and storage by auto-downsizing pictures to ~50kB or some other size. Upload whatever size the poster wants to (it is only once) but everyone sees it as 50kB max. 2nd, I see this on other sites I frequent, registered members get to see the photos but non-registered users do not. And 3rd, modern websites automatically record the user's last read post in a thread. When you open an already read thread, it starts on the first un-read thread. By doing this, the photos they have already seen are not loaded again, saving bandwidth. One can always go back to the earlier posts when necessary.

I almost always start websites by seeing "unread posts" or "new posts". Currently on this site, I get the list and when I open that. I get the full page which includes many photos I have already seen, wasting bandwidth.

Luckily, this site does have a jump to first unread.
One of the other forums I'm on does not, so on highly active threads (80k members there) you have to try to find where you last left off.
