I am building an A arm front suspension for a sidecar motorcycle. I am using a modified Can Am Spyder front upright. The upper ball joint connection needs to be moved in line with the lower ball joint to provide a zero KPI. To make the modification easier, the upper ball joint mount will be converted from a tapered mounting hole (the entire upright is made of cast or forged iron or steel) to a simple bore in steel. The rigs total weight with driver will be in the 900 - 1000 pound range. My question is, what size rod end would be appropriate for this use. Metric size, please. Thanks.

Why is KPI an issue? You could rotate the spindle a few degrees in the side view to eliminate any caster and index the joints travel to eliminate bind.

If you need to convert, I’d use a high strength rod end with a bore the same size or larger than the original canam joint and grade 5 or 8 hardware if the hardware is kept short (not like a bumpsteer kit). The details are important.

"Why is KPI an issue?"

For a sidecar with hub center steering, Without zero KPI, as the tire wears, scrub is introduced that must be counteracted by toe out. Toe out is a no no for sidecar steering.

Single A arm susp and the original bike suspension front and rear or something else? Leading A arm to replace the original fork system? I feel like a dentist, poking around. That or a nosey neighbor peaking over the fence.

Tough to get zero kpi and zero scrub in a narrow wheel using a modified upright. Probably easier to make one out of RHS to fit a bolt-on bearing hub and sphericals, then use a high dish spare with a replaceable tire.
