Looks like the lost posts have been returned - maybe!!

When you click on "view active posts", there is a gap between Oct. 7, 2019 and today, Nov. 14, 2019.

Everything posted over the last month has now been lost. Also when I check some of the photos posted back in 2017 they cannot be found. So some things are still missing like posted photos.

Correct me if I'm wrong. Also cannot access the "profile" link to correct problems in that area (such as an avatar).

Roy

well this is good news! It does look like the images got burned up though, but the main thing for me is that the text is intact.

Who do we thank for sorting out what was obviously not an easy thing to sort?

Woo Hoo!!

I'd rather have the 2-1/2 years of text and no pics than nothing at al. Too bad we lost 5 weeks of stuff, but we were warned!

Thank you Dave and whoever else that may have helped along the way. We owe you big time.

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

A big +1 to that!

And I'd be happy to send some Paypal $$ to support this Forum, if'n I knew where to send it. I imagine a number of folks in this community feel likewise.

+2 to that! I would be happy to be a "Contributing Member". Especially if it kept the place ad free as it is now.

Okay...looks like were in..better shape. Probably as good as it is going to get.

I'll take a stab at getting the pictures back, but I'll be honest...that is not too likely.

FWIW, I took a full backup of the site before today's work. 19.1 GB! Took 8 hours to download!

Looking ahead, I'm going to have some conversations with our hosting company, and evaluate other options.

Like several of you have said, the community here is invaluable. I wonder how the number of completed Locosts would compare without this forum? I remain committed to keeping it alive and healthy, even though I'm not on here as much as I used to be.

I'll also staunchly resist any advertising, or hosting on free platforms. While those tools have their place and their value, both would likely change the essence of this forum.

Likewise, I think the threaded forum format is the best platform for this type of rich, persistent reference information. Chats are nice, social media is addictive, wikis are flexible...but for organization of ongoing technical discoveries and discussions, I don't think you can beat a threaded discussion.

We may have a fundraiser at some point, particularly if we make some technical changes...but at this moment there is nothing to throw money at, so spend your bucks at Jeg's or Ebay instead.

One of the forums I'm on is hosted by DreamHost, and they have a very interesting setup.

There's a paypal donation link, and it directly feeds the hosting account, no admin intervention required.
Makes things easier, and no "Well what if their card/billing/xyz changes" worries.

I think they have an automated backup option as well.

Do you have the attachments on-hand, or were they only able to recover the database itself?

You're the BEST Dave!

Glad to see your feelings on both the value and funding of the site haven't diminished. Considering how I recall the (exceedingly rare) past fundraisers going, I wouldn't worry too much about whatever 'technical changes' might be required to keep the site running reliably.

That's great that you were able to get the info back Dave, thanks for all your hard work. I don't post on here much anymore either, but I definitely lurk a lot. As for the number of finished cars without the forum, I'm fairly certain mine wouldn't have been finished without it. I'm pretty much computer illiterate, but if there's ever any costs to be covered I would be more than happy to chip in.

Dave,
It is much appreciated that the effort it takes to keep this forum up is time consuming, sometimes daunting, and I am not alone in saying thanks many times over. My Locost is complete (as much as they get) thanks to this forum.
