Spindle/Upright pics and measurements

The idea of this thread is to archive pictures and dimensions of the different uprights used for Locost builds. If you have a picture and the measurements please post it. If you cannot host it just send it to me via email and I will host it and you or I can add it to this thread.

I'll start. Here is the front right left upright from my Miata.

The measurements for the upper balljoint location are based on using the balljoint below which has a center 1" above the top of the hole.

TRW makes one that matches the taper of the Miata's upper hole. PN: ES2074R (Jack at Kinetic usually has them in stock)

A pic from the side, notice that the holes for the balljoints are located about 1/4 inch in front of the center of rotation. (look at the black sharpie marks, the one on the left goes throught the center of the balljoints and the one on the right goes through the center of rotation)

I'll try to post up the same thing with my "book" Stellar/Cortina spindles in a week or so. (We're moving house so they are in the bottom of a box somewhere).

Thanks Dave for the pic. What is the approximate measurement from the center of the lower to the center of the upper balljoint? Looks to be about 7.5"?

BJ to BJ distance is 280mm using Previa Lower BJ Moog P/N K9825 an Upper BJ from a Ford F- 250 & 350 P/N ES 150R which has 3/4-16 threads

The stock van wheel end wt is 58lbs, But the wt can be reduced about 10 or 11lbs with the above BJ's and eliminating the dust shields a some grinding

Disc size is 243mm same as Celica, above Picture is a Celica disc.

Word of caution the vans came with 4 different brake calipers depending on yr and model between 1983 and 86, if looking parts or a rebuild kit bring the caliper or get a complete caliper.

A fellow builder dropped off a pair of Chevette uprights / spindles from his build this afternoon. Here are the measurements from them.

Unfortunately I don't have any of the hub or brake parts so I don't know where the WMS is in relation to the upright. Is anyone able to measure this?

I will try to shortly do a more elegant job of representing but I wanted to post the dimensions of the 89 to 92 Tbird MN12 spindle. The first thing that must be done is to cut off the top part of the spindle down to the sway bar mount. Bolt pattern 5 on 4.25 with MN12 parts, can be changed to 5 on 4.5 by bolting on SN95 (Mustang GT) hub and rotor. A fair amount of weight can be saved by cutting off caliper mounts and using 99 to 04 SN95 PBR aluminum 2 piston calipers with the lower hole for the dust plate bored out it appears to be in the correct position for 1 caliper adapter bolts, the other will have to be a fabbed part.

Height 8"
Spindle center 2" above lower BJ
KPI 9 deg
WMS to lower BJ 3.25
Spindle leads KP .75
lower BJ mount 1.1"
Upper BJ mount .75" both 10 deg drop from spindle angle
Steer arm 5" hole leads BJ .75" above BJ .25"

BTW, the Miata spindle has the tie-rod end located at the exact same height as the lower BJ, and 1.0" outboard. This gives ~100% Ackermann. It's also 4.25" forward of the lower BJ.

When I negotiate a parking lot in my 2001, it sure doesn't feel like it....

Not a common spindle on this side of the world, but it does have some information relating to this thread. Over here I believe it can be found on the Merkur series cars form 1985 to 1989.
